Film Class: The 10 Second Filmmaker Ultra Short Films

To make a film, where to begin? How about starting with with 10 seconds.

Film Class: The 10 Second Filmmaker Ultra Short Films

This is my new filmmaking class. Over the years, I’ve gathered a lot of experience—not just through filmmaking, but also through teaching. This is actually my seventh film class. And to be honest? When I first came up with the idea for this one, I thought it was kind of silly. Maybe even a clickbaity, shortcut concept that I don't like.

But the more I tried to shape it, the more it started to dawn on me: this could actually be something. A wild little idea that might really help people crack into filmmaking.

The lessons don’t tell you what to find. They help you find it.

Instead of just jumping into making the lessons and rambling on, I decided to make several 10-second films—to truly experience the process first-hand.. And the experience? Genuinely eye-opening. I got hooked on this weird, playful format. It refreshed my creativity in a way I didn’t expect.

So now, I truly believe this could be a powerful entry point for anyone curious about filmmaking. Of course, that’s not for me to decide. I just know I had a blast making a class that began with one simple question.

“To make a film, where do you begin?”
How about starting with 10 seconds.

This simple constraint is a creative superpower—It clears out the noise: expectations, overthinking, pressure to impress. What’s left is focus, instinct, and play.

With the 10-Second Filmmaker method, you can rapidly explore, test, and refine the tones, moods, and genres that truly excite you.

🎬 The Big Takeaway - You’re pushed to make bold creative choices, revealing your voice and unlocking visual experimentation. Each short becomes a building block, sharpening your instinct for story, composition, and meaning.

🔬 The Opportunity - A 10-second film becomes a micro-laboratory for observing your creative instincts. Like sketching, it reveals patterns and impulses you can expand into longer works.

🎯 Your Future - By the time you take on bigger projects, your filmmaker identity will already be sharpened and defined.

This class is approachable and designed to build confidence while providing a thorough introduction to filmmaking. There are no shortcuts—just a clear process to unlock your potential as a visual storyteller.

✅ Your Creative Checklist:

1. Essence Over Excess

  • You don’t have time for complex setups.
  • You must identify what you truly care about and express it clearly.

2. Precision in Storytelling

  • What emotion or idea can be fully captured in 10 seconds?
  • What makes your story distinct from someone else’s?
  • Repetition over multiple 10-second films reveals patterns—your recurring themes and obsessions.

3. Decisive Visual Language

  • With limited time, every frame must count.
  • How you frame a shot, where you place the camera, and how you move within the frame—all of this defines your style.
  • Over time, you’ll notice your go-to framing, pacing, and rhythm.

4. Genre & Tone Experimentation

  • A 10-second horror film feels different from a 10-second comedy.
  • This lets you rapidly test and refine the tones you enjoy working with.
